AUSTRALIA Industrial shares bounce back

NZPA-AAP Sydney A burst of futures trading and short covering by investors left Australian stocks firm at the close of trading yesterday. One broker said the market rebounded from a slow start despite overnight news of a 21-point slide in the Dow Jones index in New York. However, he said there was “not a lot of upside” in the market before Christmas because of expected higher interest rates in Australia and overseas. Leading industrials rebounded after a dull start. Coles Myer lifted Aust3oc to 1030, BHP rose 2c to 752, Elders IXL 1c to 286 and Bell Resources 5c to 135.

Ariadne shed 1c to 18 after Ampersand’s takeover bid of one of its shares for every two Ariadne shares. Sherwin Pastoral gained lc to 105, at par with Monday’s take-over offer by BT Australia. Among other industrials, AFP Group featured in heavy turnover for the fifth consecutive trading day as 9.1 IM shares worth $10.75M were traded. The stock was steady at 120. BTR Nylex slipped 24c to 876 on news of a sAusts4oM private note issue, and Bond Media fell 2c to 48. The banks were mostly firmer. National Australia rose 6c to 660, Westpac was up 2c to 572.
