S.A. paper banned

NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg South Africa’s bestknown opposition newspaper, the “Weekly Mail,” was banned by the Government for four weeks yesterday. The ban, imposed by the Home Affairs Minister, Stoffel Botha, under emergency powers, was published in a special edi-

tion of the Government Gazette.

It was the most serious move Pretoria has taken to quell the anti-apartheid press since introducing sweeping news media controls in June, 1986. Mr Botha issued a statement accusing the “Mail” of repeatedly publishing articles which threatened public safety and order.

The Left-wing Johan-nesburg-based weekly, which has an influence far beyond its 23,000 circulation, has been an outspoken critic of the Government and has focused on alleged police brutality and black township grievances. The “Mail” is the third newspaper to be banned by Mr Botha.
