Mr Nick Burke, of the Spreydon Fire Service, leads a group in the inaugural 5km race held by the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Fire Service in North Hagley Park, yesterday. Fifty-five runners in 11 teams took part in the race, aimed at improving the physical fitness of service members. Senior officers, including the Fire Commander, Mr Michael Burke, participated. Trophies were presented to the winners of the individual, and team section. Mr Alan Johnson, of Red Watch, won the individual section and the Training Division No. 1 team won the team race. The Fire Service is now considering challenging other emergency services to compete in similar events.
