Golf clubs stolen
Christchurch has been anything but hospitable to the Otago golf team at the Government Life inter-provincial tournament at Shirley this week. The Otago players had an evening meal at a restaurant on Tuesday evening, only to discover that two sets of clubs had been stolen from their locked car on their return. The unfortunate pair were Phil Conlon and Geoff Marsden who, ironically, had taken their sets of clubs with them, rather than leave them at the Christchurch Golf Club, because they considered it was safer. Everyone pitched in yesterday morning to help the two players in their dilemma, even the opposition, Aorangi, lending wedges and putters. Marsden was not inconvenienced by using the reserve Brian Shaw’s clubs, scoring his first victory of the tournament. In spite of its initial handicap, Otago managed to overcome Aorangi, 3-2. The missing clubs had not been located yesterday afternoon.
