Fifty years

A man who has produced more New Zealand track and field champions than anyone else in the history of the sport, Valdemars Briedis, celebrated his seventieth birthday last month and the season which opens on Saturday will be his fiftieth since obtaining his coaching diploma from Riga, in Latvia. Since settling in New Zealand in the early 1950 s Mr Briedis has played a vital role in developing athletics at all levels. More than 150 national champions owe their successs to his guidance. He was the New Zealand Olympic coach at Munich, and has been a Canterbury selec-

tor for as long as most people can remember. As club coach of the Technical club, his contribution has been beyond measure.

He begins his fiftieth season as a coach as a member of the Canterbury selection panel, and as chief coach of the Technical club.
