Ganilau endorses Fijians’ position
NZPA-Reuter Suva The Fijian President, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau, yesterday said Fiji’s ethnic groups should work together but the “special position” of the indigenous people must be recognised. The interim Government, appointed like Ratu Ganilau by then Lieutenant-Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka after two coups last year, has released a draft Constitution which guarantees political domination for indigenous Fijians. “We must always be ready to place our collective interests and obligations ahead of individual rights,” Ratu Ganilau said in a national broadcast yesterday marking the 18th anniversary of independence from Britain. “At the same time there must be a just and honest appreciation of the special position of the indigenous Fijian community and the contribution of other communities in the economic and social advancement and development of our country,” he said.
