Mob meeting venue

PA Wellington Kaiwharawhara Park near Wellington is being considered as an alternative venue to hold a proposed Mongrel Mob convention at Labour weekend. Wellington City Council’s parks director, Mr Richard Nanson, said yesterday the soccer field at Kaiwharawhara — above the Hutt Road — was being looked at as an alternative to the old tip site at Happy Valley. Options also included

private land at Ngauranga Gorge and the Basin Reserve which had high fences. Wellington’s Mayor, Mr Jim Belich, called yesterday for people to “keep their cool” after complaints from residents who live near Happy Valley. He said intensive discussions had been held at the week-end and he might call a special full council meeting before Wednesday’s regular meeting.
