Australia higher in quiet trading

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher, but off the day's highs, in lacklustre trade. Brokers said the market "started with a bang" on the back of the 42 point gain on Wall Street on Friday, but drifted due to a lack of follow-through buying.

"The Australian market is not in a buying mood,” one broker said. Investors were cautious, awaiting further leads from offshore markets, he said. Tokyo and New York were both closed yesterday for public holidays. By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was up 9.4 points at 1535.2.

The industrial sector gained the most ground, with the all industrials index lifting 15.9 points to 2542.4. The gold marker rose 9.9 to 1606.2 and the all resources 4.6 to 780.8. National turnover was a thin 74.02 M shares worth sAustlO9.l3M as rises led falls by about three to two.

Among industrials, Brambles added 20c to 1060, BTR Nylex 14 to 860, News Corp 10 to 996 and TNT 10 also to 475. Pacific Dunlop rose 7c to 455, Adsteam 6 to 710, Coles Myer 5 to 1025 and BHP 4 to 776.

Losers included Bell Group, down 5c at 180, AWA, down 5 also at 315, and S. A. Brewing, off 3 at 232. Among banks, Westpac lifted 10c to 590, the ANZ 4 to 526 and National Australia 2 to 680.

The gold sector was firmer on steady gold bullion prices around $U5403.55/95 an ounce. Renison added 20c to 680, Barrack Miners 10 to 300 and Forsayth 5 to 250.

Australian Consolidated Minerals rose 5c also to 280 as brokers Macquarie Equities booked IM specials worth sAust2.7BM. Western Mining came off its high of 514 c to close steady at 508 while Emperor fell 6 to 438. In the oil and gas sector, Vampgas shed 5c to 255, Ampol Exploration 4 to 192 and Oil Search 1 to 69. Energy stocks to gain were Santos, up 2c to 354, Bridge Oil, up 2 also at 92, and Woodside Petroleum, up 1 at 173. Most leading miners eased off their early gains. Closing
