Art space in centre
Young Canterbury art is celebrated in the opening exhibition at the Robert McDougall Art Annexe in the Arts Centre.
The new gallery space will be officially opened today and open to the public from tomorrow.
The opening is the culmination of a struggle by the civic gallery staff for more space for exhibiting works from the McDougall collection and touring displays. The former Centre Gallery in the Arts Centre has been renovated in a $lOO,OOO project to open the annexe. Last year the project was taken off the Christchurch City Council’s budget and the gallery’s director, Mr John Coley, was charged with finding sponsorship to pay for it. This year the council relented and allocated money for the project
The annexe will be used as the McDougall’s venue for contemporary New Zealand artists. The opening exhibition, “Here and Now,” of work by 12 Canterbury artists, epitomises the sort of work the gallery plans to exhibit in the annexe.
The participating artists are Joanna Braithwaite, Gary Collins, Williams Dunning, Neil Frazer, Jason Grieg, Linda James, Grant Lingard, Philip Price, Richard Reddway, Grant Takle, Bianca van Rangelrooy and Tracey Wilson. The annexe will be under the supervision of a curatorial assistant, Ms Laurence Hall, and a custodian, Mr Martin Young. Ms Hall has joined the McDougall from the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt and Mr Young from the Southland Museum and Art Gallery. "Here and Now” will continue until November 20.
