End of airline predicted

PA Wellington The imminent decision to sell 25 per cent of Air New Zealand to Qantas will result in the airline no longer existing within 10 years, a former Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, said yesterday. Qantas and Air New Zealand were competitive rather than complementary, Sir Robert said. Rationalisation between the two airlines would inevitably favour the larger airline while diminshing the smaller.

Maintenance facilities would gravitate to Australia, with a loss of skilled jobs in New Zealand. Operational decisions would be made for the benefit of Australia.

“At a certain point it will become obvious that the smaller airline is merely an appendage to the larger, and a total take-over will result,” Sir Robert said. New Zealanders would lose one of their proudest possessions .
