Dairy wages less than dole
PA Nelson Some dairy farm workers could get more money on the dole. A recently gazetted award for dairy farm workers has pay rates for inexperienced workers at $118.83 gross a week. This includes board and lodging which is provided by the dairy farmer. A further $4O can be paid if an employee provides own board and lodging. For experienced workers aged 20 or older, pay rates are $206.92 gross a week. This includes board and lodging, and works out at $10,759 a year.
A single person, aged 20, on the dole could receive $108.63 a week and an accommodation benefit. Federated Farmers’ dairy section chairman, Mr Geoff Mathis of Tirau, agrees some farm workers could get more on the dole, but he says few farm workers would be dissatisfied with award wages. He says few farm workers are paid the award. “The award rate is for the person who may have some limitations, and the majority of farmers pay 20 per cent to 25 per cent above award,” he said.
