Bread price rises queried

Arable farmers in North Canterbury will ask the Consumers’ Institute to investigate bread price rises. A 4c increase in the price of bread has been announced because of increases in the price of flour but farmers say they are being paid less for their wheat than they were three years ago. The arable section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers was told yesterday the price of bread had increased 25 per cent since the Government abolished the Wheat Board three years ago. The section had decided to ask the Government to re-establish the board. Sir William Dunlop suggested the Consumers’ Institute might be able to take up the argument because it had been consumers who had faced increased costs. Sir Hugh Rennie said the latest 4c increases for bread equalled another $lOO to $l4O a tonne on the price of wheat. No such increase had been oaid to growers.
