New era in men’s tennis
Men’s senior inter-club tennis will enter a new era when the BNZ shield competition starts at Wilding Park today. Judy Phillips and Robyn Hunt have signed up with men’s clubs in order to get tougher competition. Phillips is with Cashmere and Hunt is in the Avonhead squad. She is battling tendonitis and will probably not play today. Both players have settled in further down the order. Apart from these changes the men’s competition has retained most of its players from last season. John Honeywell, who played for United last year, has been tempted to Te Kura's ranks and Hamish Faulls from Elmwood last year, has gone to Shirley. United has an interesting line-up of tried and tested players and a youngster, Jason Loveridge, who has been performing well in the junior competitions. Don Preston and Bill Thom are making a comeback to the senior grade. Chris Glasson and Tim Preston combine to make up the rest of the team. The women’s competition has been boosted with the successful entry of Edgeware, which lifts the team numbers to five. Interest will be focused on its new No. 1, Miriam Fischer, of West Germany, in the club’s first match next week. The draw is.—Men: Edgeware v. Te Kura; Elmwood v. United; Shirley v. Cashmere; Avonhead v. Fendalton. Women: Elmwood v. Fendalton; United v. Shirley; Edgeware bye.
