Chch hockey trio after trophies

By KEVIN TUTTY The majority of hockey’s national trophies have escaped the clutches of Canterbury teams this year, but this week-end three Christchurch club teams will be endeavouring to redress the balance. The semi-finals and finals of the national men’s and women’s interclub competitions will be played at Mt Albert Park in Wellington today and

tomorrow. Canterbury will be represented by Pegasus, in the Adidas-spon-sored men’s competition and by Woolston and Harewood in the women’s competition which is in it inaugural season. None of the trio will have an easy week-end. All three will be playing teams from Auckland today.

In its semi-final Pegasus will meet the team it beat 4-2 in the final last year — Sommerville. The

other semi-final is between Massey of Palmerston North and St LukesAlbertians - Mangere (SLAM for short) also from Auckland. The draw creates the possibility of an all Auckland final, but it is not a scenario that will eventuate as far as Pegasus is concerned.

Pegasus won both the Canterbury championship and grand final this season, and if it retains its national title tomorrow

the only title that will have escaped it this year is the Canterbury indoor hockey title. The women’s draw has also been changed from that originally published. Had it been adhered to Harewood and Woolston would have played in the semi-finals today, and Auckland University and St Lukes-Albertians in the other semi-final, ensuring a north-south final. Today Woolston will

play University and Harewood will play St Lukes. It is a pity that Woolston, the top ranked Canterbury side, and University, the winner of the Auckland championship, will meet in one semifinal. Harewood has reached the semi-finals without having to play a match. It had a bye in the first round and it won its second round game against Victoria University by default.
