Cricketer conquers cancer
NZPA-Reuter Melbourne The Australian test allrounder, Simon O'Donnell, said he would return to first class cricket as captain of Victoria after winning a battle against cancer. "It's the greatest thrill I have ever had in cricket,” he said after state cricket officials named him the captain of Victoria for Australia’s Sheffield Shield series.
O’Donnell, aged 24, was pronounced fit in March after three months of chemotherapy. Doctors diagnosed cancer in his chest following Australia's 1987 World Cup tour of Pakistan and India. He returned to the crease for the first time last week in a suburban match and was bowled for a duck but says he is fitter than ever after a year out of the game. “Twelve months out of the game or not, if I see a ball I think I can hit I'm going to hit it. If I think I can get a guy out then I’ll do it.”
