Proportional representation
Sir,—Little in the way of honour, courage or virtue has distinguished France this century, but Mr Wood (September 19) salutes France because it has done the vital thing and changed from proportional representation. Ignore all other countries, including most of Europe, which have decided to keep it — France has spoken, and is so obviously superior that the argument is closed. I greatly admire Mr Wood’s devotion to la patrie and the way he battles so valiantly with his one little fact. I am surprised, though, to discover that even he finds our present system not totally perfect. He complains that the boundaries commission "systematically erodes communities.” Obviously he wants our system to be even more unequal and arbitrary than it is now. Never mind. The Prime Minister before last year’s election promised a referendum on proportional representation. When we vote in that we will be able to say whether we think the French way is the right way. — Yours, etc., D. J. ROUND. October 1, 1988.
