Approval gives students hope
PA Wellington
The Technical Correspondence Institute has won approval to offer the national diploma in accountancy next year.
The recommendation to accredit the institute was made by a team of experts contracted by the Authority of Advanced Vocational Awards (A.V.A.A.).
Although a full meeting of the A.V.A.A. has to make the final decision, approval is understood to be virtually automatic. The decision offers some hope to students at Wellington and Christchurch Polytechnics who were stunned when their institutions were refused accreditation.
Wellington Polytechnic’s principal, Mr Bob Budendorfer indicated at the time that it might be able to run the course under the supervision of an accredited institution, which could include the Technical Correspondence Institute. The head of accountancy and law at the T.C.1., Mr Roger Dowling, said that was probably unlikely and it would have to go through the process of being approved by the A.V.A.A.
But the institute would be able to offer the course to Wellington students through correspondence and to students at Christchurch Polytechnic.
