Improved outlook

PA Wellington Business confidence has risen sharply in response to the recent fall in the exchange rate, according to a National Bank survey. The bank’s October “Business Outlook” says the prospect of economic recovery in 1989 seems to be gaining hold in the business community. The survey conducted last month shows expectations on the level of activity and investment over the next 12 months are up. The favourable exchange rate turn seems to have triggered the most significant shift in business opinion this year. The survey, of about 650 businesses, resulted in the bank's index of business confidence turning positive for the first time in 1988. The index, based on the percentage of respondents expecting business conditions to improve over the next 12 months minus the percentage expecting deterioration, reached 23.
