Australia Shine off positive day

A-AAP Sydney Australian stocks closed firm, but off the day’s high G lat ® selling took the shine off what had been a positive days trading, brokers said. One broker said the market began well on the back of gams •on overseas markets and selective buying among quality stocks kept the market higher before light selling returned. But he said buyers were still cautious and not convinced of the strength of the market’s gain after the downward pressure of the past three days. At the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index had risen 3.5 points to 1515.6 after earlier reaching 1519.7. The gold marker lifted 5.3 points to 1563, the all resources 4.2 to 766.1 and the all industrials 2.2 to 2517. National turnover was a moderate 77.42 M shares worth sAustl3o.74M as falls just exceeded rises. AWA was the star performer of the industrial sector, adding 21c to 326. BTR Nylex lifted 18c to 840, Burns Philp 10 to 355 and Hudson Conway 7 to 142. Wormaid edged up 2c to 160, as 3.28 M shares were traded and Ariadne 1c to 19 despite reporting the largest loss in Australian corporate history of sAust64oM. CSR rose 5c to 427 and Bond Corp 3c to 213. Losers among industrials included Coles Myer, down 15c at 1015, News Corp, off 8c at 976, the Bell Group, off 5c at 180, and BHP, down 2c at 772. Among banks, the ANZ and National Australia closed steady at 516 and 674 respectively. Westpac fell 4c to 574.
