Watching birds and people

The endless fascination of fitting imaginary lives to unknown people leads to an unexpected romance for Brenda and Malcolm in “Watching,” a new comedy love story beginning tonight (8.30 on One). Brenda watches people. From a park bench or her favourite seat in her local, the Grapes, fast-talking Brenda joins her sister Pamela in their own game of inventing elaborate fantasy lives for the passers-by and pub regulars.

Malcolm is a little different. He doesn’t hold much with watching people, but is an incurable and fanatic bird-watcher. When work is over Malcolm’s hobby takes him

on his ancient motorbike — complete with side-car — to the hides of northwest England. Brenda (Emma Wray) shares a Liverpool flat with elder sister Pamela, while Malcolm (Paul Brown), lives with his widowed mother.

A chance meeting in the Grapes — and a minor case of mistaken identity on Brenda’s part — brings the unlikely couple together.

“Watching” charts the bumpy path of Brenda and Malcolm’s relationship as they contend with Pamela (Liza Tarbuck), Malcolm’s mother Mrs Stoneway (Patsy Byrne), and his workmate Terry (Perrv Fenwick).
