Random checks to increase
PA Wellington Motorists could expect random stopping to check for drunken driving to be stepped up during the next two months, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, yesterday. “Speed and alcohol are two major factors in New Zealand road fatalities and it is my aim to continue the impact the Ministry of Transport is having with Hawk speed radar and random stopping,” he said.
The further step to random breath testing for drunken driving was not yet Ministry policy. Random testing was under investigation by the Ministry’s research branch after the recent Road Traffic Safety Research Council seminar in Wellington. “Campaigns like the one last Christmas and New Year where all drivers stopped for speeding were automatically breath tested came close to random breath testing.
