‘Hundreds’ use tax amnesty
PA Wellington Hundreds of people are taking advantage of the Inland Revenue Department’s two-month tax amnesty which offers protection from prosecution and penal tax to anyone disclosing tax irregularities. A tax totalling $l.l million has been worked out for 700 people who have claimed the amnesty and figures are still being added up for another 400. “We are pleased with the response so far and I congratulate those people who have come forward to straighten up their tax affairs," said the Acting Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mr David Henry yesterday. “After the amnesty period we will take a stronger line in relation to tax evasion. The maximum court fine on convic-
tion for furnishing a false return is $15,000 a return and penal tax can be charged by the commissioner at up to 300 per cent of the tax evaded. The amnesty guarantees protection from this,” he said.
