Talks planned on steroids

Public interest in the use of steroids by atheletes has prompted three Christchurch sports doctors to hold a seminar on the subject. “Steroids and Sports — Magic or Madness” will give general information on what steroids are, how they work and what the side-effects are, said one of the organisers, Dr Charlie Baycroft, yesterday. The steroids issue hung heavily over the Seoul

Olympics, especially after the Canadian sprinter, Ben Johnson, lost his 100 m gold medal when traces of an anabolic steroid were found in his urine after the event. Society had to decide what it felt about the use of steroids, said Dr Baycroft. The seminar, on October 12, will be held in the James Hay Theatre at the Christchurch Town Hall, and will begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $lO.
