'Fire risk in Canty now ‘very high’

A high fire risk in Canterbury is worrying firefighters. A lack of sustained rain meant there was a high fire risk in Canterbury, said the Conservation Department’s deputy principal fire officer, Mr Barrie Thomas. It was 147 days since the last rain at Twizel. The forests were becoming drier and drier and strong north-westerly winds added to the danger. People lighting fires with or without permits should take careful account of changing weather patterns, said Mr Thomas. The New Zealand Timberlands (Canterbury) protection officer, Mr Dennis Powell, said he was worried about a number of Canterbury forests. The fire risk was worse than last year, and he felt concerned every time a strong wind blew.
