Heading for success?
Having initials, abbreviations and cryptic messages shaved into hairstyles is the latest craze at the Cadbury New Zealand road cycling championships in Dunedin.
Several members of Canterbury’s team in Dunedin have had “C” for Canterbury shaved on to the side of their heads. In a last minute fad Dunedin hairdressers have been flooded by cyclists wanting messages inscribed.
Loyalty to the Canterbury side has gone further in some instances with sponsors’ names and even “Canty” and “Chch” appearing in hairstyles. New Zealand’s 4000 m team pursuit team at the Olympics in Seoul shaved “N.Z.” on to the sides of their heads and it appears this is what has prompted the cyclists. Even more bizarre will be the hairstyles of some Otago riders. It has been rumoured that the province’s colours — blue and gold — will appear on some cyclists’ heads. Accompanied by the name “Otago” on both sides of the rider’s head, these cyclists will be the most obvious.
