Unions sponsor comedy
NZPA-PA London Two British trade unions are branching into show business by providing £30,000 ($81,967) sponsorship for a new play about the National Health Service. The National Union of Public Employees and the National Association of Local Government Officers are backing the comedy, “Ear, Nose and Throat,” about a rebellion by hospital staff patients over plans to close a department because of N.H.S. cuts.
The secretary of N.U.P.E., Mr Rodney Bickerstaffe, said, “This bright new comedy has a special appeal in its treatment of the deadly serious cash crisis crippling the N.H.S. After all, laughter, unlike the Tories’ cuts, never hurt anyone.” Mr John Daly, of N.A.L.G.0., described the play as “first-class entertainment with a message... the perfect choice for the unions’ first joint sponsorship.” The play, by Sue Townsend, stars Georgina Hale, David Yip and Miriam Karlin. It will tour the provinces before showing at London’s West End, possibly in December.
