Court doubles jail sentence for rape
PA Wellington The Court of Appeal has doubled a 4>/ 2 -year jail sentence imposed on a man, aged 33, for rape and wounding with intent to commit or facilitate rape.
The Court, granting leave to the Solicitor-Gen-eral to appeal against a High Court sentence imposed on Michael Morrison Herbert Retimana, said the nine-year sentence was somewhat longer than would ordinarily be appropriate. The Court comprised Sir Robin Cooke (president), Mr Justice Somers and Mr Justice Casey. In the judgment, Sir Robin said the crimes were committed when Retimana intruded into a party late at night. His victim was a girl, aged 17. She had not been able to attend work for three days as a result of her injuries. Sir Robin said Retimana had appeared regularly before the courts and had a long list of previous convictions, although none previously for sexual offences.
