A return to origins

Austin Cole took over Lichfield Motors 10 years ago. At that stage it was a specialist in handling Japanese cars but it had to diversify because there were not enough prob-

lems with the Japanese vehicles. “The wheel has come full circle since then. Now, with so many more Japanese cars on the road we are back to dealing mainly with this type of

vehicle. It is not that they are more unreliable than in the past, it is just that there is a predominance of Japanese vehicles around,” said Austin Cole, owner of Lichfield Motors. Lichfield Motors has all the latest in diagnostic equipment including a Monica system which plugs into the car’s computer to check out the vehicle’s injection system. Clogging injectors remain a problem with Japanese imports mainly due to New Zealand’s petrol but Lichfield Motors will flush out the entire system on the car. Also, Lichfield Motors has a rolling round facility, a set of rollers which will simulate any road condition from the speed limit on the open road to driving around the Port Hills.

“It is necessary to have all the modern equipment to keep up with the advances in car technology. The days of tuning a car by sound are definitely gone, while the place of the local garage has also altered with the increase in sophistication. “We offer a small, friendly, efficient service. “The customer can come in and we will show them what has been done to the car, the old parts that had to be replaced and a full break-down of the cost,” Mr Cole said.
