Form reversal

Caulfield Cup hope, Celtic Spirit, staged a form reversal to win the sAustsl,Boo Cranbourne Bicentennial Cup (2050 m yesterday. The One Town-Sterling stallion beat only one runner home in the Turnbull Stakes (2000 m won by Vo Rogue at Flemington on Saturday. Trainer, Meggs Elkington, explained there were excuses for his disappointing performance. “His feet were tender and sore after the Turnbull. I have a new farrier and he might have put the plates on too tight. I’m not saying that was the reason but he did pull up sore in the hooves on Saturday.” Elkington said he poulticed the four-year-old’s legs all afternoon on Tuesday to ensure he was right for yesterday’s race. Ridden by stable jockey, Chris Barrett, Celtic Spirit (20-1) came from midfield with a strong burst, hit the lead at the top of the straight, and raced away to score an easy two and a half length win. The veteran. Toyed (101), was second with ttie Sydney gelding, Algonquin Club (16-1), a further three-quarter length away third. The disappointment of the race was 5-1 equal favourite, Mr Danamite, which raced handy to the lead, but dropped out sharply before the turn to finish eleventh. Bronze Knight (10-1), ran a good race to finish fourth, but the New Zealand gelding, Red Comet (9-1), was never really a chance, finishing tenth.
