Day of highlights at Ellerslie tomorrow

Special correspondent Auckland It is a toss-up just which of the Auckland Racing Club’s several features at Ellerslie tomorrow is the biggest attraction. A further meeting, at weight-for-age, of Horlicks and The Filbert is certainly an item of great interest but perhaps no more so than the good three-year-olds which will race in the Winstone Guineas Trial. A jackpot with a pool of more than $lOO,OOO, TV cover of four races at Caulfield and the use of a big, outdoor screen for the first time at a New Zealand race meeting should be other crowd pullers. The 2000-metres Firth Warren Sandman Stakes affords the two O’Sullivantrained stablemates, Horlicks and Banderol, their last racing opportunities before Melbourne where they have important engagements, Horlicks in the W. S. Cox Plate and Banderol with his Melbourne Cup nomination. Horlicks is performing exceedingly well — she seems unable to do otherwise — and while Banderol has not been as impressive, he has looked in need of racing and is bound to have improved. Horlicks has had two wins, one over The Filbert at Wanganui, and a second in three starts this season. Both the first two were over 1600 metres, the third in which she just failed to match Serestrina, over 1400 metres at Avondale. In the W. S. Cox Plate, Horlicks will have to go 2040 metres, and against Poetic Prince, Bonecrusher and Australia’s best middle-distance runners. This will be a real test of her readiness, The Filbert being always such a game opponent. Jetbei: 2 Race 1 12.10 ORAKEI HURDLES $12,000; 2760 m 1 803 Docior Sam 2 R. Burton 66.0

It is hard to allow Banderol much chance against Horlicks and The Filbert, but he will be expected to run on past most of the others and possibly into a minor placing. Banderol takes a while to get going, but he is a solid stayer at best as he showed when winning the 3200 metres Sydney Cup last autumn. This will be his fifth start since he came back from a winter spell. The Winstone Guineas Trial looks between Power Chief, Regal Echo and Secret Indian, each having shown signs of building on the promising form they showed last season. Testament is entitled to be an early favourite for the $120,000 Winstone Guineas, at Ellerslie tomorrow week, but Power Chief, Regal Echo or Secret Indian, with a good win this time, could threaten his position. Power Chief and Regal Echo had no luck last time they raced, Power Chief being clear too late to do better than a minor placing behind Testament at Te Rapa, Regal Echo was so badly checked in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas that he lost his chance altogether. From eight starts as a two-year-old Power Chief gained three wins and three minor placings and Regal Echo, from five attempts, managed three wins and two minor placings. The prospects of them being among the top three-year-olds looked bright even then. Secret Indian has established himself as a genuine young galloper. It was another solid run that brought him his placing behind Testament in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes, second promoted from third. 2 Dinah’s Card 14 64.5 3 953 Won’t Be Easy 13 D.
