Smolenski double looks on cards

By

JEFF SCOTT

The Weedons trainer, Jack Smolensk!, should go close to winning the T.A.B. double at the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow with Gina Ross and Charles Nero.

The first leg, the Yaldhurst Hotel 20,000 Handicap, marks the reappearance of last season’s top four-year-old mare, Bionic Chance, and while strongly fancied on trial form, she will need to be in peak condition to match a race fit Gina Rosa, last term’s “Aged Mare of the Year.” Gina Rosa has come back better than ever this term and if the gaps had opened fully 100 m out in last week’s Flying Stakes at Ashburton, there is little doubt she would have won. She gets another chance tomorrow at Motukarara, and is handily drawn in the 2200 m sprint. Only bad luck again it seems will keep her out of the finish. Bionic Chance has drawn wide but her trainers, Alister and Lindsay Kerslake, have said they will only start her if she is ready to show something close to her best. On this score, she must be highly respected. Speedy Cheval provided a minor feature of the Flying Stakes with his big late finish in a sprint home, and while

drawn badly again, he would ‘not surprise by reaching the placings. Like Gina Rosa and Bionic Chance, he too has raced well on grass previously. Starship has not been beginning as swiftly as he can from standing starts in recent times, and this has brought about his only two lapses this season. Viewfield Prince, placed in this race last year, returned to his best in the Methven Cup a fortnight ago, and adds to the form puzzle, while Skipper Dale and Imperial Time only need an ounce of luck to figure prominently. Charles Nero, a costly failure when resuming under these conditions at Methven after getting his tongue over the bit, produced a winning trial for the second leg of tomorrow’s double, the Gallery Interiors Pace, with his huge run for fourth at last week’s Ashburton meeting. The Clever Innocence gelding was checked at the start and staged an eyecatching late finish at the end of the 3200 m in 4:12.3.
