New caps chosen for Emerging bowls team
PA Auckland Seven new caps have been selected for the New Zealand Emerging Players bowling team which will tour the North Island in December. The team is: Peter Thorne (Auckland), Trevor Smith (Counties), Paul Wilton (Hawke’s Bay), Brian Baldwin (Taranaki), Peter Shaw (Manawatu), John Leitch (Wellington) and Bruce McNish (Canterbury). Originally selected in the team, but forced to withdraw, was Keith Slight (Wanganui), the only member with national experience. He was in the 1986 Commonwealth Games team. From December 2-11, the
side will play zone teams in Wellington, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Thames and Auckland. The president of the New Zealand Bowls Association, Mr lan Birch, said yesterday the side would have the extra incentive of impressing the national selectors while on tour. It is almost certain that, after negotiations with the Australian Council, a New Zealand Emerging Players side will tour Australia next August. “Our international stars should have sound replacements who also have international experience,” Mr Birch said.
