New tax rates
Sir, —I think we should all take our hats off to the AuditorGeneral, Brian Tyler. He is doing a good job, has the courage to speak out and he must stay in that job. If the Government can waste $2.5M on advertisements then give Mr Tyler a rise. At least we will get value for money, which is more than I can say for some M.P.s. This Government has walked over us long enough. Its arrogance has no end. — Yours, etc., R. SAXON. October 1, 1988. Sir, —Is the Government’s new tax really fair? A husband and wife with two children both work. They earn $303 gross a week each. Under the old tax rate they were taxed $63.19; under the new tax rate they are taxed $72.72 each. They now between them take home $19.06 less a week than before. To gain any benefit from this new tax rate a worker has to gross $460 or more a week. Thousands of part-time workers grafting away to supplement the family income are going to lose money under this new system. — Yours, etc., B. G. KERR. October 2, 1988.
