Local government
Sir, —The “New Zealand Herald” (September 29) quotes Mr Elwood as calculating for Christchurch a saving of SSM a year through local authority staff reductions. The Local Government Commission is suggesting that the various councils have been poorly managed by letting their organisations become overstaffed. It would seem that there is something seriously wrong with the commission’s reasoning. Christchurch is well ordered and has been so for many years. It is a fact that rates are reasonable, considering the services provided. When staff are reduced, the service must be reduced, but the rates will not be. Christchurch should wake up and answer back to the commission. — Yours, etc., J. G. HODGSON. October 3, 1988.
