The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Two petitions were presented when Parliament sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. Mr R. J. Tizard (Lab., Panmure) presented the petition of Ruth French and 206 others asking that Riverside Post Office be reopened. Ms Anne Fraser (Lab., East Cape) presented the petition of Elizabeth Hayes and 84 others asking that an employ-ment-equity act be passed. Ministers answered 21 questions. Members then began the regular Wednesday afternoon general debate. After the general debate, members began debating the second reading of the Hastings City Council (Energy) Empowering Bill, a local bill. This was given a second reading, as was the Waikato Electricity Authority Bill. Mr G. B. Braybrooke (Lab., Napier) moved' the introduction of the Napier City Council (Conference Hotel) Empowering Bill. After passing a first reading, the bill was referred to the appropriate select committee for consideration. The House adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. When the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. members resumed the interrupted de- , baie-' on the introduction of the Bank of New Zealand (New Zealand Ownership) Bill, a private member’s bill. A division on the bill's introduction was lost, 29 votes to 40. Mr D. C. McKinnon (Nat., Albany) rose to move the introduction of his private member’s bill, the Hospital Acts (Closure) Amendment Bill. Debate on the bill's introductiii was interrupted wh&i the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
