Rabuka promoted
The commander of the Fiji military forces, Sitiveni Rabuka, has been promoted from Brigadier-General to Major-General, an army spokesman said. The promotion was announced in the lead-up to celebrations this Friday to mark the first anniversary of Rabuka declaring Fiji a republic after the two coups last year. The spokesman said the new rank was awarded by President Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau and was effective from yesterday, making it the first time in Fiji’s military history that the security forces had been led by a man with a rank higher than brigadier.—Suva.
