Timaru candidates show dash

By

DAVID McCARTHY

Saveur lost no support for the Timaru Herald Stakes with a smart sprint down the straight at Riccarton yesterday but attractive trials came too from candidates for the supporting events on the Timaru card. Trudeau was one to catch the eye, Cheryl Walter accompanying him over 1200 m on the plough which hosted most of the fast work. The grey ran the journey in 1:17.2, his last 600 m in 37.2 and the last 200 m in 11.6. Trudeau was a good second at Geraldine last start when up against a stronger field and rates a leading

chance under welter conditions tomorrow. The Hastings trainer, Trevor Whittington, has had mixed fortunes on his southern trip so far but things could change when Kitt lines up in the distance maiden tomorrow. The lightly raced Barcas gelding was too sharp for La Truce (Stevenson) when Hamish Malcolm accompanied him over 1000 m which was cut out in 1:07.4 the last 600 m in 38.8 and the last 200 m in 11.4. Joytripper (Jackson) and Flowing Silver (Walter) went a comfortable 1400 m in 1:32.2 running home their last 600 m well in 37.2. Slick Million

(Lee) was enthusiastic while being held to 38.9 for his last 600 m. Super Jack (Pitman), a Fusion six-year-old which recently joined the Pitman stable, went with Diarmaro (Fallen) over 800 m in 54.6, the last 200 m in 11.3 while Schomberg (Pitman) was rather too smart for Comparable (Fallen), a horse not always committed to his best deeds on work days. Schomberg looks well for all that. Kelly Moss (Stevenson) ran 600 m in 40.1 while a three-way gallop among Aplari (Davison), Navy Lark (Pitman), and Regal Romp (Pelling) had neither the value nor the

' result expected. Aplari, the only runner for the Bergerson stable tomorrow, jumped away to a quick advantage at the 700 m and was always clear of Navy Lark which beat Regal Romp, the 800 m in 53.5 and the last 200 m in 11.9. Regal Romp’s effort looked most disappointing but his connections were not disheartened as he is not an ambitious worker and races in blinkers. Saveur and Extra Plush were still winding up passing the 600 m peg but put some polish on their work rate in the last 400 m running that trip in 23.2, the last 200 m in 10.9 and

the 600 m in 38. Saveur was going well at the finish having an edge over his stablemate which will be racing in blinkers again tomorrow after failing without them at Orari. Juilliard, a newcomer to the Garth Jackson stable, was restricted to easy work. A five-year-old mare by Sound Reason, Juiliard was with Patrick Campbell at Awapuni and has been sent south partly because of the success of Trudeau, another Sound Reason mare also trained by Campbell earlier. Juilliard was a maiden winner at the Egmont meeting last May for David Walsh.
