Greyhounds Minor upset in Ashburton Cup

Topaz Again caused a minor upset when she downed a talented field in the Lion Breweries Ashburton Cup at the Chertsey Domain last Sunday.

The brindle bitch settled in behind the leader, Knight Club, in the early running, but as the field raced along the back Knight Club rolled off the rail allowing Topaz Again through, and she scored comfortably by three lengths in 31.285. Knight Club held second comfortably from Dawn Mist a further two lengths away. Westmere, which was having his first outing this season, ran on strongly wide out and he should improve further over the coming weeks. Silent Jewel continued the improvement she has shown recently when she came with a strong late run to snatch the Tinwald Tavern Ashburton Oaks on the line after settling well back early. The Dave Kingstontrained bitch encountered trouble when leaving the traps, but she recovered well and soon had the’ leader Rick’s Order in sight. Metal Tip dashed up alongside Rick’s Order as

they prepared for the run to the line, but Silent Jewel powered home on the rail to take the honours in 31.855.

The maiden Metal Tip did extremely well to finish second in this company, and her run suggested that she will soon quit maiden ranks for owner Derek Copland of Ashburton.
