Hornby sports awards to be presented on Saturday
Twenty-four nominations have been received for the Hornby Sports awards, the subject of a dinner at the Riccarton Park Function Centre on Saturday evening. The awards were instigated by the Paparua County Council and representatives of the combined Hornby sports clubs in a bid to promote civic pride in the community and draw the people of Hornby closer together. The chairman of the organising committee, Barry Anderson, is hoping for an attendance of about 300 at the function. “We have suffered a lot lately in Hornby with the downturn in the economy, and this is just what we need,” he said.
Barry Corbett, of 3ZB, will act as compere, and the guest speakers will be Jeremy Coney, Sir Ron Scott and Pat Barwick. The Hornby High School will add to the community aspect of the occasion by producing its jazz band to play background music. One of the pupils, Tina Lovell, aged 16, designed the logo adopted for the major trophies.
