Gales stop meeting with Minister
By
OLIVER RIDDELL
in Wellington Gales through Cook Strait all day frustrated the efforts of Greymouth civic leaders to meet the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, yesterday. Mr Jeffries said he wouid try to meet them later in the week. Representatives of the Greymouth, Runanga and Grey local authorities, and the Greymouth Harbour Board, wanted to talk to the Minister about
the board’s future. Under the Port Companies Act, the Greymouth Harbour Board has to be replaced and the Local Government Commission solution was for the port to be run by the three local authorities. The Ministry of Transport’s general manager of marine transport, Mr Kevin Ward, said the Harbour Board had been unhappy with aspects of this proposal. There was also the fact
that it had not been easy for the board to run with financial success in recent years. The three authorities were unhappy at running the board if that meant taking over old debts, he said. It was these issues that the civic leaders had hoped to discuss with Mr Jeffries and whether Government money was available to provide a bridge into the new port administration.
