Blenheim maintains boycott of meeting

By RODGER KINGSBURY in Blenheim The Mayor of Blenheim, Mr Leo McKendry, has reaffirmed that his council will not be represented at the meeting in Nelson today when the Local Government Commission announces indicative reorganisation proposals for Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast. When asked yesterday if the council had had a change of heart since a meeting last week when it unanimously decided to boycott the meeting, Mr

McKendry said. “Definitely not.” The council was certainly heartened by the fact that Kaikoura was to remain part of Marlborough, he said. “There is no doubt about that at all but we certainly believe that our action is the right one. It was taken largely to signal to Mr Elwood that we do not want to compromise our position and that we think it inappropriate that we should hear our status in such an important matter in a neighbouring province,” Mr McKendry said.
