Car registration to be tightened
PA Wellington Honest people would benefit from moves designed to tighten loopholes in the motor-vehicle registration system, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries. Motor registration procedures are being reviewed by the Ministry of Transport. Under the present system, vehicles were not usually physicallymatched with their records and so it was easy
i to fabricate records to cover stolen vehicles, Mr I Jeffries said. The review team has > said the New Zealand ■ Post’s public register and ; the enforcement register • kept on the Wanganui computer system should be amalgamated. The team also recomf mends that vehicle inspection should be combined with licensing t and change-of-ownership • transactions so that a vehicle’s identity is ' checked regularly.
