Driver had cannabis in car boot
A man, in the boot of whose car police found 20 500 g bags of cannabis, was sent to the High Court for sentence later this month. In the District Court yesterday Judge Noble declined jurisdiction. Robert Malcolm Haines, aged 30, self-employed (Mr K. N. Hampton), had earlier admitted having the drug for sale or supply, at Seddon, on September 12. He had told police he was paid $5OO for delivering the drug from Christchurch to Blenheim. Bail was renewed until sentencing. STOLE DRESSES No explanation was given by a housewife, aged 37, who admitted stealing nine dresses to a value of $2264. Annette Evelyn Hughes (Mrs J. Parish), was convicted and remanded to October 19, for sentence. Sergeant B. Scott said that on the afternoon of August 23, Hughes was seen by staff of Quinns Fashions to put three dresses, worth $1132, into her bag. When confronted, she pulled the dresses out of the bag and ran off. When police executed a search warrant at the address of the defendant, six
more dresses from the same shop were found. Hughes also admitted attempting to pass a packet containing five valium tablets to an inmate at Addington Prison while kissing him. The defendant was convicted on all charges and remanded to October 19 for sentence. DEPOSITIONS A man facing three indictable charges arising out of the aggravated robbery of a man, aged 50, late last month was remanded to January 30, next year, for the taking of depositions. David Barry Cooper, aged 20, a nursery worker, is charged with robbing the complainant of his wallet, assaulting him with intent to injure, and with causing him grievous bodily harm at the time of the robbery. SEX CHARGE A man, aged 51, charged with having sexual intercourse with a girl, then aged 13, was remanded, without plea, to October 12. The accused, a solo parent, is charged with committing the offence between February and May. As a condition of bail, he was ordered to have no communication with the complainant.
