Jobs in frigate deal
PA Wellington The Anzac ship project to replace four New Zealand frigates could generate more than $lOO million worth of work annually for New Zea-land-based companies, according to a key member of one of two consortiums vying for the contract. Mr Paul Pope, head of the New Zealand industry programme team, McConnell Dowell, said the project could provide at least 1000 new jobs, possibly more. His company is a 15 per cent partner in Australian Warships Systems, a New South Wales-based consortium. The New Zealand Gov-
ernment has until early next year to decide whether to remain in the $5 billion project. New Zealand’s share could be $2 billion. Mr Pope said the debate over New Zealand”s future involvement had ignored many positive aspects. He said between 50 and 100 New Zealand companies could be involved in the project. These ranged from companies employing 20, to giants like AWA and Philips who employed thousands. Many more could be involved but McConnell Dowell was concentrating on the larger items in the tender at present.
