Watch on for stolen bullion

NZPA Sydney Police in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea are watching metallurgical firms for a consignment of silver and gold worth sAust26o,ooo ($330,000) that went missing on a Qantas flight between Brisbane and Sydney on September 30. New South Wales police said yesterday the 16kg of precious metal was in partly refined form and would need to be purified before it could be sold.

Two years ago shipments of gold disappeared between Sydney and Melbourne. New South Wales police said they were investigating whether the two heists were connected. Last month’s consignments consisted of B.6kg of gold bound for a metallurgical firm in Sydney and 7.5 kg of gold and silver bound for the Western Australia Mint in Perth. The Qantas flight was from Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea via Brisbane to Sydney. Cargo handlers checked the consignments and found them intact at Brisbane. When the plane arrived in Sydney, the cargo had vanished. The empty containers were later found by Qantas staff in Wellington.
