Protesters disrupt film

NZPA-AP Paris Protesters set off tear gas cannisters and stink bombs in movie theatres across France to disrupt the nation’s first showings of the controversial film, “The Last Temptation of Christ.” In Avignon, four people in the audience rose about an hour after the film started, began to shout and went into the projection room where they ripped up the film, authorities said.

In Paris, about 600 protesters at a demonstration called by followers of the traditionalist Roman Catholic archbishop, Marcel Lefebvre, clashed with police in front of a Left Bank movie house on the Boulevard St Germain. One police officer was reported injured. Showings were disrupted in three Marseille cinemas, one in Angers and one in Paris by tear gas and small stink bombs set off by the protesters..
