Mr Litterbug with some of the children who helped him clean up the city’s streets, in Cathedral Square yesterday. Mr Litterbug, who is the Keep Christchurch Beautiful campaign mascot, is with (from left), Melanie Ely, aged nine, Jenny Ahtnt, aged eight, both of St Mary’s Parochial School, and Blair Gulleford, aged eight, of Wharenui School. The rubbish collecting campaign was organised to herald the Keep New Zealand Beautiful week beginning; tomorrow. Schools throughout Christchurch were involved in removing litter from playgrounds, parks and streets in their vicinities. They converged on the Square at midday with their rubbish to demonstrate the mess thoughtless litterers are making of the city. The Christchurch City Council provided a rubbish truck to remove the litter. —Photograph by ANNETTE DEW
