Trust board rejects remarks

PA Rotorua The Whakatohea Maori Trust Board has dissociated itself from “deplorable and inflammatory” remarks made by the chairman of the fisheries sub-committee of the New Zealand Maori Council, Mr Maanu Paul. Mr Paul, speaking on

behalf of the Mataatua people from Opotiki, said the four Maori representatives in Parliament should resign if the controversial,. fisheries bill was accepted in its present form. The Board’s chairman, Mr Claude Edwards, said the trust board had had n(j discussions with Mr

Paul and it completely dissociated itself from his remarks. “We wish to publicly express our concern that he has taken free licence to make statements that name the Whakatohea people, and has ignored the trust board’s over-all role in the Opotiki district” Mr Edwards said.
