Cambridge Stud new Guineas sponsor

New Zealand’s most successful breeding establishment, Cambridge Stud, is to sponsor the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas to be run at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s cup meeting on November 9.
Cambridge Stud, home of Sir Tristram, Danzatore and Gold And Ivory, takes over from Feltex who have sponsored the race for several years. The 1600 m Group One event, the first of the major three-year-old classics open to both sexes, will be worth $200,000. “We are thrilled that a stud of the stature of Cambridge is prepared to give support of this nature to a classic race run in the South Island. It is a boost to racing throughout the country,” said the Canterbury Jockey Club chairman, John Austin, when announcing the sponsorship yesterday. Patrick Hogan, principal of Cambridge Stud, had indicated interest in supporting the C.J.C. and the opportunity to do so for the Two Thousand Guineas was ideal for club and sponsor. The Cambridge Stud sponsored spring classic has consistently attracted the best three-year-olds in commission. Balmerino, Vice Regal, Uncle Remus, Little Brown Jug, Altitude, Steely Dan and Weston Lea are among those inscribed on its roll of honour while familiar names such as Our Flight (second to Clansman in 1982) Field Dancer, Bonecrusher, Westminster and Satisfy have been among the placed hojses in recent years.
