‘Press’ entry well trialed

“The Press’’ entry in the Shell 100 Powerboat Rally has been successfully trialed on Lyttelton several times in attempts to find the best combination of boat/motor and propellers. The Powerboat Centre has supplied “The Press” team with a brand new Buccaneer 560 ET Cuddy Sport and 140 horsepower Johnson engine, along with a driver and mechanic. Buccaneer boats are designed and built by a New Zealand company based in Hamilton. Gerry Gerrand designed the 560 Cuddy which is 5.6 m overall and one of the luxury models of his fleet. It has a beam of 2.25 m and a deadrise of 19 degrees. The boat weighs 650 kg, minus engine and is capable of withstanding

outboards between 90 and 175 horsepower. After some calculations, a 140 horsepower Johnson was chosen for our entry. This outboard is a V 4, two-stroke engine of 122 cu in. Standard features of the unit include variable ratio oil injection, a tuned exhaust system and electronic starting. Testing this motor/boat combination, we found different propeller sizes and designs gave different performance and we eventually settled on a propeller which gave us good top speed and also good efficiency. When “The Press” and Powerboat Centre start Sunday’s rally we will have the best of equipment to give the best result.
